Taking everything into account, GKids decided that the film would not be embraced the same way other Studio Ghibli films were, and decided to cut costs by not producing a dub. While times may be changing, an animated film geared towards a teenage audience is one of the worst things you could have, as most teenagers wouldn’t be caught dead watching a cartoon. ![]() Both of these movies really spoke to me, and I would like to see something similar to these two. I just recently watched two similar anime movies by Studio Ghibli, Ocean Waves (which is getting a US release on the 28th, 23 years after release, definitely go watch it) and Whisper of the Heart. In fact, the worst part of Ocean Waves was that the target audience was primarily teenagers. Anime similar to Ocean Waves and Whisper of the Heart. The movie was also mature and would not appeal to families. While the animation was pretty good, due to the TV nature of the project the quality of the animation was of much lower quality than you would expect from a Studio Ghibli film. The people in charge watched the film and felt a pit in their stomach: the movie was going to be a tough sell. When GKids acquired the catalog they also acquired Ocean Waves, and the studio took a hard look at the film. While Disney did obtain the rights to release the movie if they wanted to, they decided to pass due to the slow pace and more mature content compared to the rest of the catalog. It was a kind of attention that most studios wouldn’t give a “practice film,” but Studio Ghibli’s name means something, and they wanted to ensure that it still did even if it was on TV. This is due to the fact that Studio Ghibli has high standards for their films, and even a TV movie was given extra attention. Instead of being a cheap film that would be made in a shorter amount of time, the film went over-budget and over-schedule. This was the idea but, well…you know what they say about the best-laid plans. The higher ups felt it would be a great way to test out a new director and give the younger animators a chance to practice their skills and cut their teeth on a TV movie before moving on to the main features. ![]() The movie was planned as a television movie for Nippon Television, with the idea being for the studio to make a smaller film that would be cheaper to produce as opposed to a full theatrical movie. It feels sad, bittersweet and nostalgic-a good way to describe the film overall.Ocean Waves is unique in the sense that it is a rare Studio Ghibli film that was not released in theaters. It's always portrayed as romantic ending up with a childhood friend/school sweetheart based on your shared history but at the end of the day, the person you're ending up with is not the person you're fondly remembering. It's a refreshing take how I used to go for this type of romance when I was younger but looking at it now, it seems shallow and toxic when forced. I don't see much value for the guy wanting to be together with a girl who obviously didn't change much. ![]() He got roped in and got dragged into her affairs during HS but they're adults now. But good thing the movie ended openly and more vague than that bec obviously I think the main guy could do better. I get why the main guy would feel sentimentality esp when he finally acknowledged his feelings for her and got the closure he needed from his dear friend. Like it didn't occur to her he might just come back which the main guy obviously did. Like why would she visit the main guy in Tokyo when she's obviously just been invited to a class reunion. But still, her impulsiveness and not thinking straight about anything is still there and just made me facepalm heavily □♀️. I would understand why she would feel sentimentality towards the main guy when the reunion was brought up. She did show potential for maturity when the main guy called her out in the hotel room about her coffee shop bs. Despite her being a biatch it's not like she's not redeemable. However, I agree that the main girl didn't change much at the end of the movie which is meh I guess. It's a realistic take how egoistic teenagers are and how small their world can be.
